Horseback riding safaris in Namibia

Get out into nature on horseback and indulge our savannah-bushlands surrounded by the stunning Uiseb mountain ranges.

It’s an exciting experience to ride out into nature on horseback and experience close wildlife encounters on the savannah-bushlands that are surrounded by the Uiseb mountain ranges. Our nature is home to animals including Giraffe, Hartman’s Zebra, Eland, Oryx, Kudu, Impala, Warthog and many other animals.

Horseback riding is available to kids, beginners and experienced riders whereby the riding activity is allocated according to experience and comfort with horses. This means that experienced riders can enjoy longer riding sessions with a faster pace while inexperienced riders can get used to horse riding in a comfortable and slow way.

Our horses are trained in the English riding style where they are prepared inside with experienced riders ensure they are in shape. To make our rides more enjoyable for the outside we use trail saddles to enjoy the outrides for both rider and the horse backs. The horses are well adapted to the surroundings, wildlife and weather conditions.

Our horses live a happy life

Our horses live a happy life on over 6200-hectares of savannah-bushlands where they can roam freely and have a good quality of life. Depending on the riding schedule, the horses may be moved to a smaller camp where it’s easier to find them to ensure that the activity goes according to schedule.

We take great pride in implementing a carefully designed training schedule that keeps our horses in optimal shape while ensuring they have sufficient time for rest and recovery. Our horses are given their daily feed along with the necessary supplements tailored to their requirements.

Regular visits from skilled professionals such as farriers and dentists make sure that our horses are in good health, who attend to their hooves and teeth every 8 weeks on average.

At Gabus Safari Lodge, the well-being and safety of our horses are of utmost importance to us. To ensure the health and comfort of our equine partners, we have established a maximum weight limit for riders of 80kg (176 pounds). This weight limit is carefully determined to prevent overloading and to maintain the overall welfare of our horses.

Exceeding the specified weight limit can cause undue stress on the horses, potentially leading to discomfort or injury. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in adhering to this guideline, as it helps us maintain a responsible and ethical approach to horse riding.

We are committed to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for both our riders and our beloved horses.

The warm African sun makes it difficult to ride at peak times which start at 10:00 and end at 16:00. During rainy days the ground is muddy and slippery which will postpone your horse riding session for the next day. Therefore the best time to ride is early morning and late afternoon.

Guests ride out into the farmlands where animals including Giraffe, Eland, Zebra, Impala, Waterbuck, Warthogs and other exciting wildlife can be spotted. Take note that this is affected by various factor including the type of activity, season and weather.
